The Flexible Smartphone

Samsung is one of the leading smartphone brands when it comes to foldable smartphones. The company has already launched Samsung Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip smatphones. And they are also working on Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 2.
Now, a new patent by Samsung shows another unique design which is clamshell-like fold. The new design shows the two foldable lines - each from top and bottom. The bottom part can be folded to the front and the top one towards the back of the phone.

However, as you can see from the image, the device cannot be folded into a completely flat design.

It is a quite weird design. The main concern about this design is its clamshell-like design. Will it be able to make its way into daily life as it would be difficult to carry. The concept and thinking is unique but there will be uncertainty about this kind of smartphone whether it will be accepted by users or not.

However, the patent approval doesn't necessarily mean that the company will definitely launch the same design smartphone. But it will be interesting to see, if Samsung is thinking to launch such clamshell-like design smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy A31

Samsung has been launching new smartphones one after another. Few days back, it had announced Samsung Galaxy M31 with 8GB RAM Variant. Now the company has launched the new Samsung Galaxy A31 smartphone in India. The device was launched few months ago globally.

Samsung Galaxy A31 is a successor to its Samsung Galaxy A30 launched back in February last year. The new smartphone comes with 6GB of RAM. It includes in-display fingerprint scanner and 15W fast charging. The device comes with three colour variants.

Price & Specifications

Talking about specifications, The Galaxy A31 features a dew-drop notch at the top center. The device houses many features which we will talk about one by one here :-

Display

Talking about display, it comes with a 6.4-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED panel and resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels. It has Infinity-U style notch. Samsung is known for its display and cameras. And this device also brings a delightful colour display.
It also include in-display fingerprint scanner along with face unlocking.

Processor

The Samsung Galaxy A31 is being powered by MediaTek Helio P65 processor which is a bit surprising thing. Instead of processors like Snapdragon SoC, Samsung has opted for MediaTek Helio P65 that too in a smartphone with 20K+ price.

Camera

Leaving aside the processor, the smartphone bags the quad camera setup on its back panel. The camers in back panel involve 48MP f/2.0 primary lens, an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens, a 5MP depth(f/2.4) and a 5MP macro(f/2.4) lens camera.
While the front side involves a 20MP selfie Camera.

Battery

Talking about battery, the devices brings with it a 5000 mAh battery which is quite good. The 5000 mAh battery is a plus point for any smartphone nowadays.
Apart from that it also supports 15W fast charging.

Storage

The Galaxy A31 comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal memory expandable upto 512GB. From storage perspective, internal memory is sufficient enough to capture pictures, records videos and store other data in device. But 6GB of RAM with MediaTek Helio P65 processor will not be much effective for gaming, multi-tasking etc.


Other Features

Other features include a 3.5mm headphone jack, 4G, Wi-Fi(2.4GHz, 5GHz), Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Samsung Knox security and Dolby Atmos surround sound.

Price and Availability

The new Samsung Galaxy A31 - 6GB RAM and 128GB internal memory, comes with a price tag of Rs. 21,999. However, with all these features especially the processor, the price of this smartphone would have been better under Rs. 20,000.

The device is available in three premium crush colour options - Black, Blue and White.
The smartphone will be available on Samsung's official website, Flipkart, Amazon and offline retail stores.

Samsung Galaxy M31 launched in India back in February. The smartphone came with 6GB of RAM with two storage variants of 64GB and 128GB. The price for 64GB storage model is Rs. 16,999 and 128GB storage variant comes with price tag of Rs. 17,999.

Now, Samsung has listed the new 8GB RAM variant of Galaxy M31 on its official website with price tag of Rs. 19,999. The model has two color options - Blue and Black like the previous ones. However, the device is not available for sale yet but it is expected to go on sale soon. The device is listed under 'Notify Me' section on Samsung's Official Website.

Specifications

Earlier this year i.e. in Feb 2020, we witnessed Samsung's second foldable smartphone named as Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The first Samsung Galaxy Fold was't success because of its display issues and thereafter the company had to recall its pre-production units. But this time, the design and concept of flip smartphone was appreciated by many as the lid can be kept open at pretty much any angle, up to 180 degrees. The device also faced criticism over its durability but was still able to maintain the sale momentum. After the success of its Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung is now working on Galaxy Z Flip 2.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 2 will be getting some significant upgrades which can make it even more popular than Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. As per the patent spotted by Let's Go Digital, the new device will have triple camera setup.
The patent shows the two designs with different camera alignments.

  • The first design looks similar to Galaxy Z Flip's design. The addition of another camera sensor has narrowed the space between the camera module and 1.1-inch back cover display.
  • The second design, on the other hand, is slightly different and allows the smartphone not to compromise the space because of the addition of third camera as the cameras are aligned vertically with LED flash light adjacent to the camera. In-fact the vertical camera setup will be helpful in maximizing the 1.1-inch back cover display as use can see in the image below.

Note- A patent filing is no confirmation that Samsung will actually go ahead with this design as the handset will presumably be launched in February next year. So, its too early to say anything with certainty.
